Shannon Macika is an AmeriCorps VISTA member serving at the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger as the Child Hunger Outreach Coordinator. A recent Penn graduate, while in college she gained several years of experience serving our local communities with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and Nutritional Development Services. Originally from New Orleans, her passion for sustainability began post-Hurricane Katrina with the pressing need to focus on coastal erosion; at Penn, she helped to lead several environmental organizations and initiatives, including the Penn Athletic Eco-Reps as they worked toward converting the Palestra basketball stadium to a zero-waste facility. Also an avid rower, she hopes to remain in Philadelphia after her year of service to continue training on the Schuylkill River and to pursue a future career and graduate education in Public Health.
